The basic purpose of our Kindergarten program is to promote readiness for first grade. Our manageable class size allows us to challenge each child according to his or her ability.
Bible: The aim of Bible in Kindergarten is to begin to establish Bible knowledge and principles of Christian living. Through Bible stories the child will see that God is creator, that the Bible is the infallible Word of God, and that Jesus Christ is his friend and Savior. The child will also be encouraged to have a heart for the world. Children learn weekly Bible memory verses.
Language Arts: The goals of language arts are to establish the skills and concepts which lay the foundation for reading, writing, speaking, and listening; introduce letters and print awareness; encourage an appreciation of literature; introduce pre-writing skills, practice letter formation and recognition; and to encourage appropriate language to express thoughts and listening skills with appropriate responses. Course content includes reading, handwriting, creative writing, speaking skills, listening skills and thinking skills.
Mathematics: The aim of the mathematics program in Kindergarten is to develop the foundation of an understanding of the patterns of mathematics through the use of manipulatives. Free exploration of manipulatives is an essential part of the program. The activities are designed to help the child see the relationship between mathematical concepts and the orderliness of God’s world. Course content includes numeration, money, measurement, problem solving, geometry, graphing, count by 5’s and 10’s, addition and subtraction, patterns, use a map, calendar, compare and order numbers to 31, estimate groups, joining, time sequence, temperature, making a pictograph, ordinal numbers. .
Science: The aim of science in Kindergarten is to introduce the child to the wonders of God’s creation. Through the study of living and non-living organisms the child develops skills in vocabulary, classification, observation, prediction, and thinking. Science is integrated into other areas of curriculum. Course content includes senses, body, seasons/weather, color, ocean life, animals, seeds/plants, health, magnets, space, and insects.
Social Studies: The goal of the social studies program in Kindergarten is to introduce the child to an understanding of himself in relationship to others and to broaden the child’s awareness of the world around him. Through the study of holiday’s, families, and past Americans, the child will see that God has a plan in history. Social studies is integrated into other areas of the curriculum.
Spanish: Introduces students to four skills necessary in acquiring a second language; listening, speaking, associating, and memorizing. Students are exposed to culture, songs, games, music, food, and fun. The goal of this course is to develop a desire to learn a second language while learning different vocabularies. Students attend Spanish class twice a week.
Music: Develops an appreciation of music as a God-given creative, expressive outlet for emotions and ideas as they respond to their Creator, their fellowmen, their environment and themselves. The students are given opportunities to explore various ways music is made through singing, listening and movement in a participatory context. Basic musical concepts such as steady beat, high/low, fast/slow are taught. Students attend Music once a week.
Physical Education: Participation in physical activities involves games and exercise drills to challenge and develop the student. Cooperative learning and putting others before yourself are continually stressed through the context of Physical Education. Students participate in Physical Education once a week.
Library: This program is weekly and designed to promote a love and appreciation for reading and to introduce the student to various authors and their works. Students will learn to appreciate the resources in a library and their responsibility for caring for it. The focus of the library is knowledge, teaching and learning.
Art: Art is an everyday part of the Kindergarten program integrated into all curriculums.
Computers are introduced in the Kindergarten rooms. Students during free play time may access games and learning programs on the classroom computer.
