Developing Habits of Mind
Inculcating the love of learning for the sake of lifelong education requires the development of habits of mind. Summer reading aids in reminding students that learning is continual, that growth in understanding comes by the renewing of the mind, and that a Great Book as a repository of wisdom calls us to greater piety in the knowledge of the self and God. Students throughout PVCP’s lower, middle, and upper schools are required to participate in directed summer reading. In our desire to develop a nurturing culture that cherishes reciprocal encouragement, all students in the Upper School read the same book, and thus share in a common experience to foster greater fellowship. Parents and Faculty are encouraged to read and reflect on the summer books to contribute to an enriching educational environment at PVCP. Please find specific summer reading instructions for each class below.
In addition to class-specific reading requirements, kindergarten through eighth grade participate in an Accelerated Reader (AR) program over the summer. Students choose books from a list of AR books as outlined in the documents below, and grades two through eight must complete AR quizzes in the office.
